Mrs. Mangala Rao, Bonsai artist, Pune 


An ardent nature lover, Mangala Rao- Nilangekar started bonsai practice about three decades back in Hyderabad.  Her dedication to learning and spreading the art has enabled her to be associated with renowned bonsai masters like John Naka (USA), Kaju Kudo (Japan), Peter Chan (UK), Budi Sulistyo (Indonesia), Robert Stevan (Indonesia), Ponsevic (Philippines) among others. 



She has been teaching bonsai to beginners and intermediate artists for years and many of her students have carved a name for themselves in the world of bonsai. Having recently relocated, she now lives in Pune and continues to focus on the art in Pune.

 She is an active member of FRIENDS OF BONSAI, a bonsai organization of Pune.  Recently SHOHIN BONSAI, a study group has been formed at Pune with the assistant of her students to conduct monthly workshops on various Bonsai techniques.

Her exploits in the art of bonsai have been recognized by various prestigious individuals and institutions. She had been associated with the following in various capacities in Hyderabad 

  • Friends Bonsai Society, Bonsai Association Hyderabad A. P.   (as President)
  • Asa Bhanu Japan Center  (Executive Member)
  • Agri Horticulture Society, Hyderabad (Visiting instructor)
  • Ohara School of Ikebana, Japan (Instructor)
She has conducted demonstrations and lectures in various places in India. In the year 2000, her solo bonsai exhibition, the very first of its kind, was held at Hotel ITC – Kaktiya, Hyderabad.  She was instrumental in developing famous Bonsai Garden, “Bonsai Wonder” at NTR gardens, Hyderabad.

Accolades
With the amount of time she has spent pursuing bonsai and bringing it to the masses, it is no wonder that she has an impressive list of accolades and recognition. Here’s a partial list of some
  • Rolling Trophy for Ikebana from All India rose show  1985
  • Citation by World Bonsai federation, Japan at the South East Asia convention and Contest conducted by renowned Bonsai master Jyoti and Nikunj Parekh.(2005 and 2008).
  • Recognition as International winner for five consecutive years of the WBFF world bonsai photo contest.
Recently she has come up with a reference book, BASIC BONSAI – THE INDIAN WAY- on growing bonsai in tropical conditions in India. This book is another contribution towards bringing this exceptional art within the reach of the novice in India
